A National Conference on Public Law 280 and Violence against Native American Women
"Mutual Solutions for the Safety of Native Women in P.L. 280 States"
This national conference seeks to promote effective strategies for tribal
and state agencies to address violence committed against American
Indian and Alaskan Native women in P.L. 280 states. Workshops will
emphasize and foster coordinated community responses and cooperative
tribal/state relationships to reduce the incidence violence and enhance
the delivery of services within tribal jurisdictions.
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, OFFICE ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The Office on Violence Against Women Office (OVW)
Technical Assistance Program provides OVW grantees and sub-grantees
with the expertise and support they need to develop and implement
successful state, local, tribal, and campus projects; increase victim
safety; and bolster offender accountability. Through cooperative
agreements, OVW supports educational initiatives, conferences,
peer-to-peer consultations, and targeted assistance that allow its
grantees to learn from experts and one another about how to overcome
obstacles and incorporate promising practices in their efforts to
address violence against women.
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has elected to enter into a Cooperative Agreement with the National Indian Justice Center (NIJC) to deliver training and technical assistance to Indian country victim advocates and legal practitioners for a PL-280 and Violence Against Native American Women National Conference.
This decision reflects a strong mutual interest in ensuring that Indian
country criminal justice, social service, and legal practitioners have
the knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive services to
Native victims of violence against women.
Who Should Attend the Conference: Registration
is available to tribal grantees currently receiving funding under the
STOP Violence Against Women Program; Rural Domestic Violence, Dating
Violence, Sexual Assault, Stalking and Child Abuse Enforcement
Assistance Program; Safety for Indian Women Program; and Tribal
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program. Tribal
Leaders, tribal court personnel, various tribal agency employees,
health and social service providers, judges, housing staff, police
officers, various county and state employees, and others who work with
domestic violence issues and are concerned about the impact of Public
Law 280 within their communities are also encouraged to attend.
